Bud Harms at far left as an Apprentice Seaman during recruit training at NTS Great Lakes in 1937. 
The barracks bay has been turned out for inspection, sea bag contents laid out at their feet.  Harms served as a Chief Petty Officer in C Division aboard USS ASTORIA during her war cruise.

Four unidentified ASTORIA sailors posing atop a 40mm gun mount circa 1946.  This twin mount was one of two added onto Mighty Ninety's fantail during her post-war refit, replacing single 20mm mounts.  Note that three of the four men in the photo appear to have a white right-shoulder stripe on their uniforms, indicating that they are non-rated men of the Seaman branch.

Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Herman Schnipper, USS ASTORIA ship's photographer.  Schnipper took this self-portrait in ASTORIA's darkroom in August 1945.  He is the source of the vast majority of the wartime photographs presented on this website.

ASTORIA plankowner Anthony Migliorisi (right) and an unknown shipmate (center) with Anthony's brother Vincent in Honolulu, 12 November 1944.  ASTORIA had just completed training maneuvers off Pearl Harbor on her way to join the Fast Carrier Task Force at Ulithi.  Vincent, a Seabee, was on Oahu and they met up in Honolulu.

ASTORIA plankowner Anthony Migliorisi, center, with shipmates P.O. Long and J. Sokal.  This photo was taken in Long Beach, CA on 15 September 1945, the same day ASTORIA arrived at Terminal Island Naval Shipyard after her wartime service in the Pacific.  Note the service ribbons--American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater with four bronze stars (they were awarded one more after this photo), and Philippine Liberation with one bronze star.
